Working with a therapist often brings up general struggles with anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and self-esteem; I am certainly qualified and comfortable helping you employ new skills for such challenges.  However, I also specialize in the following life events/struggles you may be experiencing in more discreet ways as an individual or couple:

  • Childhood Abuse (Sexual, Physical, Emotional, Religious/Ritual)
  • Traumatic flashbacks/nightmares
  • Relationship problems (communication, intimacy, vioelnce/abuse, sexual dysfunctions)
  • Performance Anxiety and Depression
  • Personal addiction or family members with addictions
  • Parenting struggles
  • Feeling stuck

If you are looking for counseling services you may be wondering what is right for you, whether you should seek individual counseling for yourself (or friend/family member), or couples counseling.  While there is no 'right' answer to this question, below are some guidelines that may help steer you in the right direction.

Individual Counseling is for those who have experienced life-long patterns that they would like to change or gain some new skills to break old patterns of thinking, feeling, or behaving.  Many individual clients want to work through painful childhood experiences, grief and loss of a loved one, chronic depression and anxiety, performance and self-esteem difficulties, etc.

Couples Counseling
can be a rich format to work through all of the issues above, especially if you are in a committed relationship with a partner.  Intimate and/or sexual relationships tend to trigger stress and difficulties that we may not otherwise experience, and working with a partner together can produce changes for both that individual counseling simply can't address.  Many individuals may see their partner's as being the ones with the 'problem' and through couple's counseling you can learn different perspective and skills that you can employ so as not to reinforce problem dynamic.  Relationships in which a sexual dysfunction is being experienced should generally seek couples counseling rather than individual counseling.  However, in cases where there is current physical violence or threats of violence, couples counseling should NOT take place.
